Hay bales made into a car, crab pots, and a scarecrowI love autumn, the crisp air, new office supplies, apple strudel, fairs, bonfires, and all our fall 4-H Clubs. While I miss the trip to the state fair and our robotics meetings, there is some fabulous fall fun to be had! Among other programs, we have the Down East Chicken Show and a Hay Bale Decorating Contest!

The Down East Chicken Show is an exciting project that allows 4-Hers to raise their own chickens as well as learn how to show their chickens. You might be wondering what goes into preparing for and participating in a chicken show. One of the key aspects of participating in a chicken show is ensuring that all of the birds are healthy and meet state and federal regulations for safe transport. Another important step to showing chickens is proper grooming. Bathing chickens is a three-step process which should take place two days before the show. The first step is a bath in warm sudsy water, then rinse in apple cider vinegar which helps the chickens dry and adds a shine to their feathers, and finally a warm water rinse. Chickens should also have their feet carefully brushed with a soft toothbrush.

The most important aspect of showing chickens starts from the moment 4-Hers get their chickens. Youth work with their chicks so that on the day of the show, their chicken is calm and easily handled. A chicken should be carried with the arm beneath the chicken so that the chicken’s head is tucked into the crook of the arm. The chicken will also be put through several different poses during the show to exhibit the chicken’s wingspan, keel, feet, and tail. The tail will also have to be flexed up and down in order to show off its carriage. It is very important for the bird to remain calm throughout these various poses.

Is the Down East Chicken Show the fall fun you’re looking for? You can find more information, as well as, show rules on our website. Maybe you’re looking to flex your more creative side? Well, we’ve got some fall fun for that too!

If you hadn’t already guessed, the State Fair is one of my absolute favorite autumn traditions. I’ve been going since I was a little kid entering my own 4-H Projects. Now there are many things I look forward to seeing every year. I love the food: roasted corn, funnel cakes, caramel apples with chocolate drizzle and all sorts of treats on top, and old-fashioned kettle corn! I love to see the beautiful garden displays, the winners in the flower show, and watch the livestock shows. I also love to see all the creativity that goes into the 4-H Hay Bale Decorating Contest. I’ll be sad to miss the food, and the gardens, and the livestock shows, but you and I don’t have to miss out on the Hay Bale Decorating!

We’ve decided to bring the hay bale decorating right home to Pamlico County! We’re very excited to decorate our own, and to see your creativity so we are hosting a Hay Bale Decorating Contest. Here’s how it works.

Display your creativity and imagination in a family-friendly, county-wide competition. This hay bale decorating contest will have three divisions: Pamlico County History and Heritage, Celebrate 4-H, and Fall Fun. Each division will have youth and adult categories. Individuals/Families may submit one entry in each division. Submissions will be compiled and released on the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Pamlico County website and Instagram so that everyone can vote for their favorites. Participants who submit entries in the Celebrate 4-H Division have the option of having their entries submitted in the State 4-H Hay Bale Contest. The first-place winners will be awarded a ten dollar gift card, 2nd and 3rd place winners of each category in all divisions, will receive a certificate.

That’s not all of our fall fun! We’ve started our Book Explorers back up. We had a wonderful adventure with our first fall Book Explorers to Spain. We have an exciting lineup. We’re off to Brazil, Denmark, and Thailand in the New Year. You may be asking how we are going to read together, do crafts, and enjoy snacks from around the world if we are still meeting virtually.

Well, we can. Registration for Fall Book Explorers Brazil will open this week. Once you have registered you will have access to the web portal for that month’s Book Explorers, and be given a pickup date for your Book Explorers kit. Each kit will have everything you need to complete the craft, geography game, and snack.
