Sittin’ in the mornin’ sun
I’ll be sittin’ when the evenin’ comes
Watching the Iron Chef
Either with someone or by myself
I’m sittin’ on the porch all day
Watchin’ the time roll away, ooh
I’m just sittin’ on the porch all day
Wastin’ time

Well, we’re not sure if that’s what Renay Knapp will be doing come November 1, but she’s earned that right. N.C. Cooperative Extension of Henderson County’s longtime Family and Consumer Science Agent will be retiring then, and we hope we haven’t seen the last of her.

We at least expect her to bring a pound cake by the office periodically so she can stay in practice. She will likely be sewing a lot. She’s been planning that since her last son moved out and she took the space over for her sewing room before he was out of the driveway. She’s been hoarding fabric since leisure suits were in style, so we know she’s got that covered.

Anyway, we will be losing an icon in our office. Renay has been the leader of our FCS programs for over 20 years. She has taught untold numbers of people how to preserve food – canning, freezing, pickling. She has taught others how to sew. Her Steps to Health program at Dana Elementary no doubt impacted numerous children to make healthy eating choices and stay active.

Renay has been the reality check for our staff. She never gets too serious about anything to not have a good laugh. She keeps things in perspective and maintains a calm demeanor even when things aren’t going according to plan. If you get something on her, you better watch out, because she will get you back.

Over the years, she has developed a faithful following of clients that depend on her for the best advice on cooking, safe food preservation, various craft activities, and just for sage advice. She has worked diligently with the Extension Community Associations for years and made many good friends in those circles that still rely on her.

NC State University gives tokens of appreciation for various lengths of service. That hasn’t always been the case. So, Renay had missed out on several of these milestone awards. Finally, on her 25th anniversary, she was in line for one. She got a genuine brick from the NC State University brickyard. She threatened to throw it back. After seeing others get coolers, umbrellas, etc., she didn’t think a brick quite captured the moment. It was quite funny.

Renay will be sorely missed as a member of our great team. She has been a leader, a teacher, an inspiration, and a great agent. It will not be easy to replace her. However, after some time off, we hope she will come back to continue to participate in Extension activities. But in the meantime, she has earned the right to relax, travel, and enjoy time with her husband, Robert.

We wish you well Renay. Our hope is for a long and happy retirement. We certainly hope we haven’t seen the last of you. You still have much to share with the world and this community. Thank you for your wonderful service.
