Collapse ▲North Carolina 4-H proudly celebrates the induction of Mr. Larry B. Hancock, retired NC State Extension 4-H Specialist, into the National 4-H Hall of Fame on Monday, October 27, 2025, recognizing his leadership, service to youth, and lifelong dedication to 4-H.
Hancock served as North Carolina’s 4-H Camping Specialist for 26 years, from 1991 until his retirement in 2017. During that time, he transformed the state’s camping program into a nationally recognized model for youth development.
Under his leadership, the camps expanded from summer-only programs to year-round learning centers that now serve thousands of youth, educators, and community groups each year. His efforts also strengthened the state’s camp accreditation standards, ensuring every facility met the highest levels of safety and program excellence.
One of many highlights throughout his career include launching Camp Corral, providing free camp experiences for children of wounded, ill, or fallen military service members. Since its inception as a pilot program at Millstone 4-H Camp in 2011, Camp Corral has grown to serve more than 30,000 children across the country.
Hancock’s passion for preserving 4-H’s history also led to the creation of the North Carolina 4-H History and Learning Center at Millstone 4-H Camp in 2003. This center highlights the organization’s heritage and continues to inspire future generations of 4-H youth.
A decorated U.S. Army veteran and helicopter pilot, Hancock served two tours in Vietnam and continued in the North Carolina National Guard, retiring after more than two decades. His military service shaped the leadership and values he carried throughout his 4-H career:
“I cannot imagine my life without 4-H. I have always strived to live up to the 4-H core values and to serve my community and country with the military’s ethos of Duty, Honor, and Country.”
Hancock has received numerous honors, including the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the NC 4-H Lifetime Achievement Award, the ACA Southeastern Distinguished Service Award, the ACA National Service Award, the Henry Marshall Service Award from Yates Mill Associates, and many more.
