North Carolina 4-H's presentation season came to an exciting close on July 21 during 4-H Congress as finalists from across the state competed in the 2026 State Presentation Finals. After advancing through county and district competitions, 4-H members ages 8–18 showcased the knowledge, communication skills and confidence they developed through the 4-H Presentation Program.
This year's competition welcomed 380 finalists representing counties across North Carolina, all of whom earned their place by qualifying at District Activity Day.
State Finals featured demonstrations, public speaking and outdoor cookery, with youth presenting on a wide variety of topics, including agriculture science, electric, entomology, horticulture science, peanut foods, poultry biosecurity, technology, and more.
Reaching the state level represents months of preparation, practice and dedication, making every finalist's accomplishment one worth celebrating. As participants refined their ideas and shared their knowledge with confidence, they strengthened the communication and critical thinking skills that help prepare them for future leadership roles, higher education, careers and lifelong success.
Dr. Shannon McCollum, interim state 4-H program leader, reflected on how 4-H presentations help prepare young people for success long after they leave the presentation room.
"The skills youth develop through the 4-H Presentation Program extend far beyond the competition,” McCollum said. "Learning to organize their thoughts, speak with confidence, and communicate effectively prepares young people to succeed in college, their careers, and their communities."
McCollum also noted that public speaking is a lifelong skill that helps youth become more Beyond Ready for future opportunities.
"Time and again, our 4-H alumni tell us that participating in the 4-H Presentation Program has been one of the most valuable experiences of their 4-H journey, giving them the skills they continue to rely on throughout their personal and professional lives."
North Carolina 4-H extends sincere appreciation to the judges, volunteers, Extension professionals, staff, families and supporters whose time and commitment made another successful year of the 4-H Presentation Program possible.
