It is time again to start ordering your fruit plants and trees! The N.C. Cooperative Extension – Alexander County Center is now taking orders and will until sold out. Please know that the earlier you place your order the better chance we will be able to complete your request.

Plants will be available for pickup on March 14, 2024. There are some new items this year as well as some we have offered previous years. As always, should you have any questions please contact the center at 828-632-4451 or email Cari Mitchell, Horticulture Agent, at cari_mitchell@ncsu.edu.

Below is a list of available plants we have this year:

Blueberries – $10.00 per 1 gallon plant (needs a pollinator)

Tifblue – Medium to large light blue berries. Ripen early to mid-season (mid-June).

Powderblue – has reliable crops of large, light blue berries because of its spring frost resistance. Berries are crack resistant and hold a sweet flavor. Shrub is vigorous and upright. Ripens mid-late season.

Premier – crops are produced with the distinctive powdery blue color on the large firm berries. The flavor is excellent, and the berries store well. Plant growth is vigorous and upright. Ripens early-mid season.

Climax – Savor loads of large, sweet, early ripening blueberries! Upright growth. Great on cereals or used for baking.  

Pink Lemonade – firm, juicy, sweet,  flavor. Early to mid -season ripening (peaks in summer and may continue producing through October depending upon location, climate, and weather). Berries will turn pink when they’re ready to be picked. Pair with another blueberry.

Apples-$22.00 per 4-5 ft tree (needs a pollinator)                    

All on dwarfing rootstocks with good resistance to fire blight. Requires another variety to ensure pollination.

 Gala (Simmons cv.) – Dark red strain of Gala and similar in size and texture. Upright and vigorous tree habit. Harvest early to mid- September. Great for fresh eating, salads, applesauce, & cider.

Grimes Golden – Old favorite, suitable for fresh use, cider, and cooking. Medium in vigor, productive and excellent pollenizer. Harvest early to mid-October.

Arkansas Black – Very late maturing Winesap- type. Harvest mid-November. Dark red, very firm, tart flavor. Great for cider.

Strawberries – $10.00 per 25 plants (self-poillinating)

Albion – (Ever bearing) produces X-large fruit that is very firm and red. Needs strong water and nutrient program to achieve its high yield potential.

Earliglow – (early bearing) Glossy, firm, medium-sized fruit are highly sweet, perfect fresh eating, jams and freezing. Very vigorous & plenty of runners make it great for homeowners. Resistant to red stele, leaf diseases and Verticillium wilt.

Allstar – (mid-season). Great strawberry for beginners. Produces large, firm berries with good flavor. Good disease resistance.

Asian Pears – $22.00 per 4-5 ft tree (needs a pollinator)

Plant with another Asian variety to ensure good pollination.

Hosui – Matures in late August. Fruit finishes with orange-brown russet. Mild in flavor, sweet and juicy.

Yoinashi – Matures mid-September. Brown russet variety. Fruit is large, firm, crisp, & juicy.

Blackberries-$6.00 per 1 gallon plant (self-pollinating)

Natchez – Early, thornless variety with large, sweet berries. Faithful producer and disease resistant.

Chester –Huge yields of large, sweet berries. Cold hardy, cane blight resistant, and thornless. Fruit comes on last year’s growth in July.

Pears – $22.00 per 4-5 ft tree (needs a pollinator)

Potomac – Fruit is moderate size and texture. Tree is moderately vigorous and resistant to fire blight. Pleasing flavor.

Seckel – small pear with yellow/brown skin when fully ripe. One of the best quality dessert pears. Ideal for home garden. Tree is vigorous, hardy, and productive.

Muscadines-$10.00 per 1 gallon plant (self-pollinating)

Lane – Black variety with medium to large fruit. Very sweet. Ripens early. Great for fresh eating.

Tara – Bronze variety with large fruit, ripening early to mid season. Disease resistant, great pollinator, and perfect for eating, jellies, juice, and white wine.

Cherry – $28.00 per 4-5 ft tree (self-pollinating)

Royal Crimson (self–fertile) – sweet red cherry with low chilling hours (meaning it will work better for our warmer climate)

*multiples are suggested for better pollination

Bunch Grapes – $10.00 per plant (self-pollinating)

Concord Seedless (self–fertile) – sweet flavor, excellent variety for pies, jellies, jams, juice and fresh eating

Asparagus – $10.00 per 10 root bundle

Purple Passion – attractive purple variety with high yields, and exceptional flavor and tenderness.

Pawpaws – Orders will depend on nursery availability. Please call Cari at 828-632-4451 if you are interested in Pawpaw trees.

This tree produces large, tropical, custard-like fruit. Fruit texture is firm with a blend of flavors; described as tasting like an intense banana pudding with a hint of mango! Pleasant aroma when ripening. Prefers good soil, drainage, and wind protection. Harvest from Sept – Oct. Matures at 20ft tall.
