At the NC 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference awards ceremony and dinner on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the McKimmon Center at NC State University, a very special surprise award was announced to recognize the contributions and dedication of a 4-H Volunteer Leader, Mike Bower.

When we think of volunteers at our NC 4-H Camps, we think of Mike Bower, especially at Millstone 4-H Camp. Few volunteers give as much time, talents, and treasures as Mike Bower. Mike continually goes above and beyond for our North Carolina 4-H Camps and Centers.

As a North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leader, Mike serves in several volunteer leadership roles, including:

  • Millstone 4-H Camp Advisory Council
  • Millstone 4-H Camp Volunteer Instructor
  • NC 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Instructor
  • Chair of the NC 4-H Shooting Sports Committee
  • National Team Coach for the NC 4-H National Rifle Team

As a shooting sports volunteer instructor at Millstone 4-H Camp, Mike is always there when we need him for facilitating rifle shooting during camp events, such as our 4-H Family Camp and summer camps. In addition, Mike spends several weekends a year facilitating rifle training for our NC 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Trainings each fall and spring, as well as our NC 4-H Shooting Sports Tournaments.

In addition to these roles, Mike has also dedicated his time over the past two years to help with the success of our annual Pickin’ in the Pines BBQ and bluegrass camp fundraising event, building us an event stage twice, putting dozens of hours of work both times. Not only did he construct our stage but he also hand-crafted two wooden items for auction, both of which were retail valued at over $2,500 or more and each item sold for $1,000 or more, including a cedar chest the first year and a cedar lined hall tree the second year.

In total, Mike has dedicated hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars of in-kind services to our Millstone 4-H Camp and North Carolina 4-H Shooting Sports program, not to mention the thousands of youth he has positively impacted through these programs.

In honor of Mike’s exemplary volunteerism with North Carolina 4-H Youth Development, we are honored and pleased to name a 4-H Campership in his honor. We cannot think of a more appropriate way to recognize Mike than to send a youth to camp in his honor.

Thanks to Mike for all he does for North Carolina 4-H and our youth!
