AIRE (Application, Interview, Resume & Essay)

What is AIRE?

AIRE (Application, Interview, Resume, and Essay) is the selection process used by North Carolina 4-H to choose youth delegates for national 4-H leadership experiences. Through this program, 4-H members may be selected to represent North Carolina at:

Youth ages 14–18 are eligible to participate. Age is determined as of January 1 of the current program year.


The AIRE Process

Youth participate in the AIRE program by completing four components:

  1. Application
    1. Youth who submit a complete application packet will be invited to participate in the state-level AIRE competitive program.
    2. Applicants should be active 4-H members who have demonstrated involvement and achievement in county, district, and state 4-H programs.
  2. Essay
    1. Applicants must submit an original essay responding to the prompt provided in the application materials.
    2. The essay should reflect the applicant’s personal experiences, character, and growth through their involvement in 4-H.
  3. Resume
    1. Applicants must submit a resume highlighting their 4-H involvement, leadership experiences, community service, and accomplishments.
    2. The resume should provide an overview of the applicant’s skills, experiences, and personal development.
  4. Interview
    1. Applicants will participate in a face-to-face interview during North Carolina 4-H Congress.
    2. The interview allows judges to learn more about the applicant’s experiences, leadership, and goals.

  • State AIRE Registration Deadline: May 15, 2026
    (Counties may have earlier deadlines. Contact your local 4-H Agent.)
  • AIRE Interviews: July 22, 2026
    Location: During North Carolina 4-H Congress

Trip Information

National 4-H Congress

A five-day national event focused on leadership, citizenship, and global awareness. Participants engage in workshops, hear from guest speakers, and connect with 4-H members from across the country.

Held annually in late November in Atlanta, Georgia.

National 4-H Conference

A six-day national leadership experience that brings together 4-H youth from across the country in the nation’s capital. Delegates engage in learning, professional development, and networking while exploring government, career pathways, and sharing their voice with federal agencies and congressional committees.

Held annually in the spring in the Washington, D.C. area.

National Leadership Conference

An eight-day leadership development experience focused on building confidence and strengthening leadership skills. Participants engage in hands-on learning and collaborate with peers from across the country.

Held annually in June at Miniwanca in Shelby, Michigan.
