In addition to programs coordinated through North Carolina 4-H, youth can also participate in opportunities led by Extension specialists and subject matter experts. These programs provide hands-on learning experiences across a variety of focus areas and connect youth to additional pathways within 4-H.
Dairy
4-H Dairy programs are coordinated through NC State's Department of Animal Science and provide youth with hands-on learning opportunities focused on dairy science and production. Participants can develop skills in evaluation, knowledge application, and communication through a variety of contests and educational experiences.
Opportunities may include dairy judging, quiz bowl, skill-a-thon, shows, and national conference experiences.
Subject Matter Specialist
Electric
The NC 4-H Electric Program is coordinated through NC State's Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering and provides youth with hands-on learning opportunities focused on electricity, energy, and electrical systems. Participants develop technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of how electricity is used safely in everyday life, with support from industry partners such as Duke Energy and Dominion Energy.
Opportunities include electric projects, energy exploration activities, and participation in events such as Electric Congress.
Subject Matter Specialist
Forestry & Wildlife
The NC 4-H Forestry & Wildlife Program is coordinated through NC State’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources and helps youth develop an understanding of natural resource management and conservation. Through hands-on learning and competition, participants explore forestry, wildlife habitats, and environmental stewardship.
Opportunities include the Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) and the 4-H Forestry Contest.
Subject Matter Specialist
Horse
The NC 4-H Horse Program is coordinated through NC State's Department of Animal Science and provides youth with opportunities to build knowledge and skills related to equine science, care, and management. Participants can engage in both educational contests and experiential learning opportunities.
Opportunities may include horse judging, hippology, horse bowl, shows, camps, and retreats.
Horticulture Science
The 4-H Grow For It Program is coordinated through NC State's Department of Horticultural Science and introduces youth to plant systems, soils, insects, and gardening through hands-on projects and activities. Participants explore how plants grow and develop an understanding of environmental and agricultural systems.
Opportunities may include gardening projects, entomology activities, and plant science exploration.
Subject Matter Specialist
Livestock
The NC 4-H Livestock Program is coordinated through NC State's Department of Animal Science and offers youth opportunities to learn about animal agriculture through hands-on experiences and competitions. Participants develop skills in evaluation, animal care, and industry knowledge.
Opportunities may include livestock judging, skill-a-thon, quiz bowl, shows, and leadership institutes.
Poultry
4-H Poultry programs are coordinated through NC State’s Prestage Department of Poultry Science and focus on poultry science and production, giving youth the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences and competitive events.
Opportunities may include poultry judging, poster contests, shows, and educational programs such as the Poultry Science Summer Institute.
