What is AIRE?
AIRE (Application, Interview, Resume, and Essay) is the selection process used by North Carolina 4-H to choose youth delegates for national 4-H leadership experiences. Through this program, 4-H members may be selected to represent North Carolina at:
- National 4-H Congress
- National 4-H Conference
- National Leadership Conference
Youth ages 14–18 are eligible to participate. Age is determined as of January 1 of the current program year.
The AIRE Process
Youth participate in the AIRE program by completing four components:

- Applicants should be active 4-H members who have demonstrated involvement and achievement in county, district, and state 4-H programs.
- Essay
- Applicants must submit an original essay responding to the prompt provided in the application materials.
- The essay should reflect the applicant’s personal experiences, character, and growth through their involvement in 4-H.
- Resume
- Applicants must submit a resume highlighting their 4-H involvement, leadership experiences, community service, and accomplishments.
- The resume should provide an overview of the applicant’s skills, experiences, and personal development.
